The desire to build a Cathedral in Drobeta Turnu Severin was manifested after the 1989 Revolution, when the severinian priest Constantin Inescu raised the issue of building a Cathedral in this city, which had only four churches. In 1992, was the parish founded, the Nativity of our Lord? and the Permanence of the Eparchial Council of the Archdiocese of Craiova decided that Father Ioan Toba be appointed parish priest and to be in charge of building the future cathedral. After obtaining the land located in the center of the city, in April 1994, His Eminence Nestor Vornicescu – the Metropolitan of Oltenia – laid the foundation stone for the new Cathedral.

On April 21, 2002, His Eminence Metropolitan Theophanes consecrated the chapel, dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lord, located in the basement of the building, following that the future cathedral will be dedicated to St. Theophanes.
